BIOGRAPHY




Dr. Goren graduated from the Honors Program in Medical Education at Northwestern University Medical School in 1989 where he was President of his class. He initiated the first program in medical ethics for students at Northwestern University Medical School.

He completed his internship at Georgetown University Medical Center where he also spent time at the National Institute of Neurologic Disorders and Stroke division of the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Goren completed his residency at the New England Eye Center of Tufts University Medical School in Boston in 1993. There he was awarded the Charles Preefer, MD award for excellence in ophthalmological research. He next served as Fellow in the Department of Cornea and External Disease at the world-renowned Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, PA under the tutelage of Peter Laibson-one of the pioneers of modern corneal transplant surgery and the treatment of corneal disease.

Dr. Goren joined the faculty of Northwestern University Medical School in 1994 as Instructor of Clinical Ophthalmology. He was appointed Assistant Professor in 1996 and in 1999 took over the duties of Chief of Ophthalmology at the Veterans Administration Chicago Medical Center, the main surgical teaching resource of the Northwestern University Ophthalmology Residency Training Program. Dr. Goren remains active in the Ethics and Human Values Program that he helped initiate at the Medical School as a student in 1985. He continues to be an integral part of the teaching program at Northwestern in addition to his active private practice.

Matthew Goren, MD has authored 35 articles in peer-reviewed journals and has delivered over 40 lectures on various ophthalmologic topics at scientific meetings throughout the country. Additionally, he serves on the Editorial Board of the journal Comprehensive Ophthalmology Update and is a scientific referee for the American Medical Association Archives of Ophthalmology, Cornea, and the European Journal of Ophthalmology. He has also served as a reviewer for the American Ophthalmological Society. He is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology.

Dr. Goren, the recipient of numerous honors, is a four-time winner of the Northwestern University Department of Ophthalmology Outstanding Teacher award. He received a Fisons Grant for ocular immunology research by the Contact Lens Association of Ophthalmologists and was awarded the prestigious Paul Revere Bowl by the New England Ophthalmological Society in 1999. Dr. Goren is a lifetime member of Kingston's Registry of Who's Who for his contribution to the field of ophthalmology and his service to the Veterans Administration.

Matthew Goren, MD maintains active memberships in numerous prominent medical societies. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, an Associate of the prestigious Castroviejo Cornea Society, and a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Chicago Ophthalmological Society, the Wills Eye Hospital Society, the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, Research to Prevent Blindness, and the Contact Lens Association of Ophthalmologists.
